Majid AL Yousef : exploring the world of Islamic contemporary calligraphy art

Majid’s a half Iraqi and half Saudi Calligraphy Artist who was born and raised in Iraq, who currently based in Dubai, he left Iraq after the war and continue his study in the UAE.

Holding his Arabic culture and background, Majid was enthusiast about the Arabic Calligraphy, the Islamic one specifically, Since an early age, he started showing a clear interest toward the artistic world, therefore he learned drawing, and with a guide of calligraphers and experts, Majid followed the Arabic calligraphy path and strived to improve himself more by discovering new calligraphy styles and learning new methods and techniques.

With an artistic open minded, Majid tried different sort of arts and gained a remarkable knowledge of them, whilst carrying a deep passion toward Arabic Calligraphy in particular through his artistic journey, besides calligraphy, he’s a graphic designer, Game developer and more.

He obtained a master degree in Game Development and interactive Design at Savannah University in the USA, in 2002, Majid moved to Dubai and started a new artistic journey.

Merging the Arabic Calligraphy with decoration

In the past, adorning middle east’s houses with Arabic Calligraphy was common thing, it was a lifestyle in which was spread over houses, mosques, or even objects, later, things started to change, the Islamic and Calligraphy art has slowly started to vanish or become rare to be found, people forgotten that art, and even worst, it wasn’t considered as a sort of art anymore, however, with the new born of the Calligraphy art movement, Calligraphy artists worked on entering this art into societies and announced it as a sort of art as it used to be.

Majid’s mission in this part was to bring this art to houses again, in a modern ways and contemporary methods, by that, people have started to show interest in that sort of art and considered it to be part of their lives in which revive that forgotten Arabic artistic culture.

An old rich Arabic-Islamic artistic culture

if you’re familiar with the Quran, then you definitely have an idea about the Arabic calligraphy, it’s full of richness and creativity, and with its various types of it, each of them offers an artistic elegant style and vision, including the Ottoman Calligraphy and the Persian, however, it has evolved by time in many different ways and forms, showing an amazing possibility of transformations and inventions.

The Arabic calligraphy is not only a sort of art, in fact it’s a culture in which needs to be protected and presented to the world in very appropriate ways, It’s the heritage of ancient creative artistes who gave they minds and souls to every letter they were creating.

Majid’s inspiration and artistic style

Majid’s artistic style has developed in several ways, starting from learning the basics of the Arabic Calligraphy and its history by professional hands, to taking the Arabic traditional calligraphy style into a different level of modernity.

holding a BA in Fine Art from Iraq before moving to the USA, Majid has had the opportunity to learn various artistic styles and to open his eyes through practicing different artistic methods in which helped him to find inspirations, it’s very clear that the Dutch abstract painter Mondrian has influenced Majid’s artistic style in many ways, including the coloring method in which distinguished Mondrian’s abstract artistic style, however , using this form in Arabic calligraphy has added a unique feature to Majid’s artworks .

His artworks tend to be curved, with focusing on adding colors in which bring the letters to life and add energy to them, some of them hold a Quranic Verses, and others might take a form of objects or simply big curved dancing letters.

Artistic activities worldwide and inside the Emirates

El Yousef’s Artworks have been featuring around the globe and inside the region, he has exposed wildly and gained an impressive reputation in the art field.

In 2011, he showcased his artworks at Sharjah Islamic art festival, adding to his exhibition at Dubai Center of Arabic Calligraphy and at several private Galleries in the UAE.

He has participated in various Calligraphy workshops inside the region, and was part of artistic projects as well.

His artworks were displayed at Time Squares in New York City as a presentation to the Arabic Calligraphy art and Culture to the world.

Through his artistic career, he’s considered to be one of the most Arabic Calligraphy influencers, his artworks give you an urge to explore more about the Islamic Art and enjoy the beauty that every letter holds.

الكشف عن عالم فن الخط الإسلامي الحديث:ماجد اليوسف

خطاط عربي نصف عراقي ونصف سعودي ولد وترعرع في العراق,لكنه يقيم حاليا في دبي,غادر العراق بعد الحرب وأكمل دراسته في الولايات المتحدة.

حاملا الثقافة العربية وخلفيتها,كان ماجد متحمسا للخط العربي,تحديدا الخط الإسلامي,فمنذ سن مبكر بدء في إظهار اهتماما واضحا نحو عالم الفن ومن هناك تعلم الرسم,وبإرشاد من خطاطين مخبرين,تبع ماجد مسيرة الخط العربي وكافح لتحسين نفسه أكثر عبر إكتشاف أساليب فنية جديدة وتعلم طرق جديدة.

ومع عقل فني متفتح,جرب ماجد أنواع متنوعة من الفنون واكتسب معرفة واضحة لكل منها ,بينما يحمل شغف أعمق نحو الخط العربي علي وجه الخصوص خلال رحلته الفنية,وإلي جانب الخط,يٌعد ماجد مصمم جرافيك ومطور ألعاب.

حصل علي درجة الماجيستير في تطوير الألعاب والتصميم التفاعلي,في جامعة سافانا داخل الولايات المتحدة ,وفي عام 2002انتقل ماجد إلي دبي وبدء رحلة فنية جديدة.

دمج الخط العربي مع الديكور

في الماضي,كان تزيين بيوت الشرق الأوسط بالخط العربي أمرا شائعا للغاية,لقد كان أسلوب حياة منتشرا حول المنازل,المساجد وحتي الأدوات,لاحقا,تغيرت الأمور وبدء الفن الإسلامي يختفي شيئا فشيئا أو يصبح نادر العثور عليه,تناسي الناس هذا النوع من الفن,والأسوء هو كونه لم يعد يعتبر نوعا من الفن,ولكن مع الولادة الجديدة لحركات الخط العربي,عمل الخطاطين علي إدخال ذلك النوع من الفن في المجتمعات وإعلان كونه نوعا من الفن كما كان من قبل .

كانت مهمة ماجد في هذا المجال,هو إحضار هذا الفن إلي المنازل بطرق حديثة وأساليب عصرية,ومن خلال ذلك ,بدء الناس في إظهار إهتمام لهذا النوع من الفن وإعتباره جزء من حياواتهم الذي يعيد إحياء تلك الثقافة العربية المنسية.

ثقافة فنية عربية–إسلامية غنية

إذا كنت علي دراية بالقرأن فحتما لديك فكرة عن الخط العربي ,إنه ملئ بالثراء والإبداع,ومع أنواعه المتنوعة,يمنح كل نوع أسلوب ورؤية فنية أنيقة وذلك يتضمن الفن العثماني والفارسي,لكنه تطور مع الوقت بطرق وأشكال مختلفة,مبديا إمكانية مبهرة من التحولات والإبداعات.

إن الخط العربي ليس مجرد نوع من الفن بل إنه ثقافة بحاجة إلي الحماية وتقديمها للعالم بطرق مناسبة,إنه تراث من الفنانين المبدعين القدامي الذين أعطوا عقولهم وارواحهم لكل حرف يقومون بإنشاءه أو كتاباته.

إلهام ماجد وأسلوبه الفني

تطور أسلوب ماجد الفني بطرق متعددة,بدءا من تعلم الأساسيات وتاريخ الخط العربي من خلال أيادي محترفة إلي نقل الخط العربي من شكله التقليدي إلي مرحلة مختلفة حديثة.

حاملا شهادة بكاليروس في الفنون الجميلة في العراق وإنتقاله إلي الولايات المتحدة,حصل ماجد علي إمكانية تعلم أساليب فنية مختلفة وفتح أعينه من خلال تجربة و طرق فنية متنوعة والتي ساعدته للحصول علي الإلهام.

إنه من الواضح جدا أن الأسلوب الفني للرسام التجريدي الهولندي موندريان كان له تأثير واضح لأسلوب ماجد الفني وذلك بالإضافة لطريقة التلوين التي ميزت أسلوب موندريان الفني,وإستخدام هذا الأسلوب في الخط العربي أضاف ملامح فريد لأعمال ماجد الفنية .

تميل أعماله الفنية للإنحناءة,مع التركيز في إضافة الألوان فيها والذي يعيد الأحرف إلي الحياة ويضيف نوعا من الحيوية فيها,تحتوي بعضا منها علي أيات قرأنية والأخري قد تتخذ شكل أدوات أو مجرد أحرف منحنية راقصة.

الأنشطة الفنية حول العالم وداخل الإمارات

تم سلط النظر علي أعمال اليوسف خارج المنطقة وكذلك داخلها,وقام بعرض أعماله بشكل واسع وكسب سمعة مبهرة في المجال الفني .

عام2011,قام بعرض أعماله الفنية في مهرجان الشارقة للفن الإسلامي,وذلك إلي جانب معرضه في مركز دبي لفن الخط العربي وكذلك في صالات عرض خاصة مختلفة داخل الإمارات.

شارك في العديد من الورش الفنية داخل المنطقة كما أنه كان جزءا من مشاريع فنية,وتم عرض أعماله في ميدان التايمز داخل مدينة نيويورك كتقديم لفن الخط العربي وثقافته للعالم.

وخلال عمله كفنان,يعتبر واحد من أكثر خطاطين العرب تأثيرا,وتمنحك أعماله رغبة في كشف المزيد عن الفن الإسلامي وشماله الذي يحتويه كل حرف.
