Magda Sayeg : The Mother of Graffiti knitting

Magda Sayeg is a textile artist and the founder of” Knitta Please”, an American of Lebanese descent who was interested in knitting since she was 16 years old, she’s also known as the mother of the yarn bombing movement.

The yarn bombing is a sort of arts style that takes knitting or crochet out into graffiti style and public Art, a very special sort of art that gives a unique feature to the place or material by knitting it, it is also called urban knitting or graffiti knitting.

Magda has started her journey as a graffiti knitting artist in 2005, when she was a shop-keeper and decided to knit a cozy cover for her shop’s door handle, she then noticed how people’s reactions were positive and satisfying, later she started to get excited about it and created a stop sign down the streets, she has received a very interesting reactions as well, therefore ,Magda saw it as a great opportunity to take her artistic talent beyond what she used to do and started creating large knitted objects .

Magda has collaborated with several important companies such as Absolut Vodka, Madewell and Mini Cooper, Comme Des Garcon, Insight 51, and still get requests of collaborations from companies worldwide.

Decorating everyday objects with knitting and crochet

The mother of the yarn bombing movement is expanding her talent by using everyday objects and turning them into pieces of arts, from stop sign, way blocks, yoga balls to Buses and Trees, she also includes Afghan blankets in most of her artworks, with using other materials as well.

Magda’s artistic style tend to beatifies things without taking away their identities or functionality.

The Mexico City bus is considered to be one of the most amazing pieces that she has created and it has opened her lots of doors to successes and good reputation in that Artistic field.

Adding to adorning Trees, she has done several installations by using only crochet, such as the permanent installation in which she created at “Dover Street Market” in NYC.

It’s all about having fun with what you’re creating

It’s a fun fact knowing that Magda’s success is a result of a moment of trying to evict boredom in order to add some color and excitement in her shop, and what drove her to create these amazing artworks today, was a spontaneous artistic movement.

Her main goal is to enjoy the process of creating what she creates and also bring life to things by coloring them with passion and love:” sometimes we need things that don’t have to do with the basics and just have to do with feeding your soul”. Says Magda in one of her interviews.

Magda has participated in shows around the world, such as Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art, Artscape festival in Sweden, and the National Gallery of Australia.

A very rare and original form of Street Art

Crochet Art is very popular especially in our region, it is a part of a cultural heritage in the Middle eastern societies , however, what’s new about it is taking it out to the streets and using it for decorating today objects, the fact that Magda managed to expand that Art by including it in big object and things that people have never imagined to see it on such things, is indeed a very big deal to Magda and to those who have this talent and never had the idea to share it in public in various ways.

It’s a dazzling form of Art and need to be taken so serious in order to be displayed to people and the public.

There’s another thing that distinct graffiti knitting from any other sort of street Art, which is the fact that it’s easier to remove unlike painting.

Sayeg has displayed a solo exhibition in Rome, and also has worked in big projects like the massive “Plan Ahead” installation in NYC.

أٌم حياكة الجرافيتي:ماجدة سايج

ماجدة سايج تعد فنانة نسيج ومؤسسة« Knitta,please »,أمريكية الجنسية ذات جذور لبنانية,أبدت إهتماما بفن الحياكة منذ أن كانت في السادسة عشر من العمر,وهي تُعرف أيضا بكونها أم لحركة حياكة الجرافيتي أو يارن بومبنج.

إن حياكة الجرافيتي لنوع من الفنون التي تقوم بدمج فن الحياكة مع الجرافيتي حيث يتم إحضارها إلي العامة ,وهو نوع فريد جدا يقوم بمنح المكان أو الأداة منظر مميز من خلال الحياكة عليه.

بدئت ماجدة رحلتها كحَّيَّاكة جرافيتي عام2005عندما كانت تمتلك محلا وقررت القيام بصنع غطاء مريح لمقبض الباب,حينها لاحظت ردود فعل الناس التي كانت إيجابية ومرضية فقررت بعد ذلك إنشاء علامة وقوف بالكروشيه ووضعها في الشوارع,تلقت العديد من الردود الأفعال المثيرة للإعجاب,ومن هناك رأت ماجدة هذه الردود الأفعال كفرصة ممتازة لأخذ موهبها أبعد ماقد اعتادت عليه,فبدئت بحياكة أدوات ضخمة بالكروشيه.

قامت الفنانة ماجدة بالتعاون مع العديد من الشركات المهمة مثل  » Absolut Vodka ,Madewell and Mini Cooper ,Comme Des Garcon,Insight51  » ولازالت تستقبل طلبات للعمل مع شركات عالمية.

تزيين الأدوات اليومية بالكروشيه والحياكة

تقوم الفنانة ماجدة بتوسع موهبتها من خلال استخدام الأدوات اليومية وتحويلها إلي قطع فنية,بدءا من علامة الوقوف,كرات اليوجا,إلي الأتوبيسات والأشجار,كما أنها تقوم بإدخال بطانيات من أفغانستان في معظم أعمالها مع إستخدام أدوات أخري.

يميل أسلوب ماجدة الفني لتجميل الأشياء دون سلب هوياتها الأصليه أو وظيفاتها.

ويعتبر أوتوبيس المكسيك واحدة من أهم الأعمال التي قامت بها ماجدة والتي فتح لها العديد من الأبواب للنجاحات وكذلك كسب سمعة جيدة في هذا المجال الفني.

إلي جانب تزيين الأشجار,قامت أيضا بالعديد من النصب الفنية من خلال الحياكة ,منها,عمل قامت به داخل “Dover Street Market” في مدينة نيويورك.

إن الأمر كله متعلق بالإستمتاع بما تقوم بصنعه

إنه لأمر ممتع حقا معرفة أن نجاح ماجدة في هذا المجال لهي نتيجة لحظة من محاولة التخلص من الملل وإضافة بعضا من الألوان والإثارة في محلها,وكذلك كون تلك الحركة الفنية التلقائية التي قامت بها هي التي أوصلتها إلي ماهي عليه الأن.

إن هدفها الأساسي هو الإستمتاع بالعملية نفسها أثناء قيامها بما تقوم به من عمل فني,وأيضا بث الحياة داخل الأشياء من خلال تلوينها بشغف وحب « في بعض الأحيان ,نكون بحاجة إلي أشياء ليس لها علاقة بالأساسيات وتقوم فقط بتغذية روحك من خلالها« .تقول ماجدة في إحدي المقابلات.

قامت بالمشاركة في برامج فنية حول العالم مثل برنامج « Hangzhou Triennial of Fiber Art, وArtscape Festival في السويد وأيضا The national Gallery of Australia ».

نوع نادر وأصلي من فن الشارع

يُشتهر فن الحياكة أو الكروشية علي وجه الخصوص في المنطقة العربية,إنه لجزء من تراث ثقافي في المجتمعات الشرقية,ولكن الجديد هو أخذه إلي خارج الشوارع وإستخدامه في تزيين الأدوات اليومية,إن حقيقة كون ماجدة تمكنت من توسيع هذا الفن من خلال دمجه في الأدوات الكبيرة التي لم يتخيل الناس رؤية مثلها لهو أمر مهم للفنانة نفسها وأيضا لمن يمتلكون هذه الموهبة ولم يفكروا في مشاركتها مع العامة بطرق متعددة.

إنه لنوع مبهر من الفن وبحاجة ليتم عرضها للعامة ,كما أن فن حياكة الجرافيتي تتميز عن الجرافيتي العادي بكونه قابلة للإزالة بسهولة بخلاف الرسمة.

قامت ماجدة سايج بمعرض فردي لها في روما وعملت علي مشاريع كبيرة مثل « Plan Ahead  » في مدينة نيويورك.
