Wissam Shawkat « art in letters »

Born in Basra « Iraq » in1974 ,and raised among supportive parents, Wissam discoverd an earlier tendency toward letters and calligraphy, as a result he worked in improving his artistic skills by various manners which leaded him into a very noticeable position among the calligraphy art comunities.

He’s a based Dubai graphic designer, Arabic calligrapher whom managed to own a very unique style in which later became known for it’s singularity and beauty that preserved the origin of our preciouse arabic language.

Wissam attended the engineering college at the university of Basre and graduated in 1996, however, the artist didn’t find himself in that field and decided to pursue his artistic dream as a full time self employee artist.

Since his childhood, his love for calligraphy was very clear toward everyone, and this love was followed by hard work in improving that part of him.

His teacher quickly noticed that talent, and encouraged him in vraious ways, he learned almost three of the most famious sort of Arabic calligraphy, the Ruqa’a style,the Thuluth, and the Diwan .

Owning all these three arabic calligraphy styles leaded him into a superior level, therefor, he had the chance to play with what he has in order to create his own magical artistic world that will influence the new generation with maintening his mother tongue.

Preserving the origin in modern ways

Wissam’s artistic mission doesn’t only foccus on producing art and creating fabulous Arabic letters, in fact , he seeks for more than that, he wants to expand his artistic knowledge and emerge it with contemprary art in which will add a value to the Arabic calligraphy.

The artist worked through the years on developing his art style and introducing this new style to the world as an evidence of how flexible our language is among the fast evolution that is happening in the art field.

He wanted to create modern styles of arabic calligraphy that can be used in design and art away from the traditional styles.

Despite the fact that Wissam was influenced by both the European and the eastern artistic culture, still, the originity of our Arabic language has played a very clear role in his works, as we can find some Qura’anic quotes, Hadith and ancient Arabic poems.

Activities and his artistic journey

In 2002, Wissam decided to leave his home land to the UAE seeking for an artistic opportunities and to achieve his dream as a calligrapher.

Things weren’t easy in the beggining, however, the artist didn’t lose a hope and kept fighting for better place in the art communities inside the USA.

He managed to work for various branding agencies, with continuing on improving himself by using wide and different range of media and materials.

Later, famous agencies started to notice his talent, and his participation in group exhibitions helped him to get the attention he desrved, therefore, he started to recieved invitations to work with important brands and get engaged with the UAE art communities.

He has participated in the Dubai international calligraphy exhibition, adding to his solo exhibition that took place at reed space in New York in 2011.

During his artistic journey, the artist maintained a very interesting and important position locally and internationally, including orgnizing workshops, calligraphy classes and more.

In 2009, Wissam found a space in one of the most active and impressive artistic platform in Dubai TASHKEEL, and his artworks have appeared in several art books and magazines .

He’s now considere to be one of the most active and influencing artists in the region.

وسام شوكت « فن في حروف« 

ولد في العراق في مدينة البصرة عام 1974,وترعر وسط عائلة داعمة ومحفزة حيث اكتشف وسام ميله المبكر نحو الأحرف والخط,وكنتيجة لذلك,عمل علي تحسين مهاراته الفنية عبر وسائل شتي والتي قادته لمركز ملحوظ وسط مجتمع الخطاطين.

وهو مصمم جرافيك وخطاط عربي مقيم في دبي,وقد تمكن من إمتلاك أسلوبا فريدا والذي أصبح لاحقا معروفا بجماله ومحافظته علي أصالة لغاتنا الثمينة.

تخرج وسام من كلية الهندسة في جامعة البصرة عام 1996ولكنه لم يجد نفسه داخل ذلك المجال فقرر السعي نحو حلمه الفني .

منذ صغره وكان حبه للخط واضحا للجميع,وقد تتبع هذا الحب عملا شاقا في سبيل تحسين ذلك الجزء منه,و سرعان مالاحظ أستاذه هذه المهارة فحثه علي المتابعة من خلال طرق شتي,فتعلم وسام مايقارب ثلاثة أنواع من الخطوط العربية بدءا من خط الرقعة و الثلث ثم الديوان.

إمتلاك كل هذه الأنواع من الخطوط قاده لمرحلة مرموقة,حيث استطاع اللعب مع كل ذلك حتي وصل به الأمر إلي إنشاء عالمه الفني الخاص به والذي سيلهم الجيل الجديد ويحافظ علي لغته الأم.

المحافظة علي الأصالة بطرق عصرية

لم تتركز مهمة وسام الفنية حول ممارسة الفن وإنشاء أحرف مبدعة فحسب,فهو يسعي وراء أكثر من ذلك,حيث يرغب في إمتداد وتوسيع معرفته الفنية ودمج تلك المعرفة مع الفن الحديث مما سيضيف قيمة للأحرف العربية.

عمل الفنان عبر السنين علي تطوير أسلوبه الفني وتقديم هذا الأسلوب الجديد للعالم كدليل علي مرونة لغاتنا العربية وسط هذا التقدم السريع الذي يحدث في المجال الفني.

أراد أن ينشئ أساليب عصرية للخط العربي والتي يمكن إستخدامها في مجال الفن بعيدا عن النموذج التقليدي القديم.

وعلي الرغم من أنه تأثر بكلا من الثقافة الفنية الأروبية والعربية,إلا أن أصالة اللغة العربية لعبت دورا واضحا في أعماله ,حيث يمكننا العثور فيها علي إقتباسات من القرأن الكريم والحديث بما في ذلك الأشعار العربية.

رحلته وأنشطته الفنية

عام2002, قرر وسام مغادرة وطنه لدولة الإمارات بحثا عن فرص فنية وليحقق حلمه الفني كخطاط.

لم تكن الأمور سهلا في البداية,ولكنه لم يفقد الأمل واستمر في المحاربة حتي يحصل علي مركز أفضل في المجتمعات الفنية داخل الإمارات المتحدة.

تمكن من العمل مع وكلات تجارية متنوعة مع استمراره علي تحسين نفسه عبر إستخدام وسائل أدوات مختلفة.

لاحقا,بدءت الوكلات المشهورة في ملاحظة موهبته,وقام بالإشتراك في معارض جماعية والتي ساعدته علي تسليط الضوء عليه,فبدء في تلقي الدعوات للعمل مع ماركات مهمة والتورط أكثر مع المجتمعات الفنية في الإمارات.

شارك في المعرض الدولي للخط في دبي,وذلك بالإضافة لمعرضه الفردي الذي أقامه في نيويورك عام2011.

 

خلال رحلته الفنية,حافظ الفنان علي مركز مهم ومرموق محليا ودوليا,بما في ذلك قيامه بورشات عمل وفصول فنية والمزيد.

عام2009, حصل وسام علي مكان داخل واحدة من أهم المنصات الفنية المهمة في دبي « تشكيل« ,وقد ظهرت أعماله في العديد من الكتب والمجلات الفنية,وهو يعد الأن واحدة من أهم الفنانين الناشطين والملهمين في المنطقة.
