Behind the apparent futurism and modernity : Dubai’s old culture

With the rapid modernization that’s happening in the world, it may be a little bit hard to find the roots of some countries and their origins , especially those considerable cities which are known as the world’s most important and commercial cities like Dubai, newly ,the style of modern architectures is designed to particularly convoy the new global standards of luxury, and some time this action can led to a sort of losing one’s culture and identity, adding to the wide changes that companied all these processes .

Today in our article we want to depict how a big city like Dubai has managed to keep its heritage despite the immense development that has happened to it through history and still happening.

Does Dubai have a culture ?

I think that most of people might get confused when it comes to Dubai’s origin or culture, and by saying that I don’t mean that it isn’t obvious that Dubai is an Arabic country, my point is that the successes that Dubai has earned in the economical, technological ,commercial, medical parts might cover up the old style of living that this amazing city used to have in the past , the simplicity that was combined with the irresistible and pure beauty of the Persian and Arabic culture.

However, it’s important to point out the fact that Dubai has an Arabic roots and culture which clearly could be characterized and seen in the traditional cloths that its inhabitant wear, and some of its local symbols that occur in its roads and streets such as date plant trees and mosques that still hold the soul of ancient architecture styles .

It’s not all about skyscrapers :

When you hear the name: Dubai, the first thing that might come into your minds may be long towers such as: Khalifa’s, luxurious hotels and large casinos, it will take you very long moments to think about others things or places that are in Dubai which may be joyful and amusement that still hold the origin soul of the city .

However, there’re some heritage sites in Dubai such as the Bastakia quarter which was built by Persian merchants and its name was taken from the town of Bastak in southern Iran.

In this area you can observe the old buildings that were built by coral and shells, it’s also where the Sheikh Mohammed center for cultural understanding locates, this center was established aiming to spread awareness of the local cultural to people and visitors.

Traditional and artistical sites in Dubai :

The amazing thing about all these old sites is the fact that you will find some places that have managed to keep the spirit of tradition and add art in between, as we always say: a little of art won’t hurt, there’s an art gallery that called: XVA which locates at the Bastakia quarter, in fact this’s not only an art gallery it’s also a guesthouse, coffee shop where you can taste the traditional dishes and the original Arabic coffee .

While walking in the suburbs of:Bastakiya, you will notice some of walls that were painted:” street art” which confirm the idea of trying to add beauty and colors in these sort of places without losing the sense of their heritage.

ثقافة دبي القديمة

مع سرعة التقدم الذي يحدث في العالم قد يكون أمر إيجاد جذور بعض الدول وثقافاتها الأصلية صعب بعض الشئ ,خصوصا تلك المدن الضخمة التي تعد من أهم المدن المتقدمة إقتصاديا وتجاريا كدبي,يميل الأسلوب الحديث في البناء إلي مواكبة المعاير الدولية والعالمية للتصاميم الحديثة للمباني والتي تتميز بالترف الفاحش وقد يؤدي هذا الفعل إلي فقدان الشخص لهويته وثقافته الأصلية وذلك لما يرافقه من تغيرات واسعة أثناء العملية برمتها .

نود اليوم في مقالتنا أن نوضح كيف أن مدينة كبيرة مثل دبي تمكنت من الحفاظ علي تراثها علي الرغم من التقدم المبهر الذي حدث ومايزال يحدث داخلها.

هل تمتلك دبي ثقافة ؟؟

أعتقد أنه عندما يتعلق الأمر بأصل دبي أو ثقافاتها قد يشعر الناس ببعض الحيرة ,وقولي ذلك لا ينفي وضوح إنتماء دبي للدول العربية مما يعني أنها تمتلك شيئا من تلك الثقافة,إنما مقصدي هنا هو أن النجاحات التي حازت دبي عليها في المجال الإقتصادي ,التكنولوجي,التجاري والطبي قد تُخَّطي علي أسلوب المعيشة القديمة الذي اعتادت تلك المدينة المدهشة عليها,تلك البساطة التي كانت مُندمجة مع جمال الثقافة الفارسي والعربي معا .

ومع ذلك,فإن الإشارة إلي إنتماء دبي وإمتلاكها لجذور وثقافة عربية لأمر مهم ,إذ أن ذلك متمثل بوضوح في الملابس التلقيدية التي يرتديها سكانها,كما أن بعض العلامات المحلية الموجود في شوارعها كأشجار النخيل والمساجد التي لا تزال تحمل الروح القديمة لأسلوب البناء يشيران إلي مدي ثبات أصالة تلك المدينة في وجه التقدم الذي يسير داخلها.

الأمر كله لا يتعلق بناطحات السحاب

عندما تسمعون الإسم:دبي,الأمر الأول الذي قد تتخيلونه هي الأبراج الطويلة كبرج خليفة,أو الفنادق الفاخرة,الكازيونات الواسعة وغير ذلك من التسليات الحديثة,قد تمر لحظات طويلة حتي يبادر إلي أذهنكم أماكن أخري موجودة في دبي قد تكون أكثر تسلية والتي لا تزال تحمل روح أصالة المدينة.

ثمة مواقع تراثية في دبي مثل حي البستكية والتي بنيت من قبل تجار فاريسين وقد تم تسمية الحي بإسم بلدة بَستك الجنوبي في إيران.

وفي ذلك الموقع يمكنك كرؤية المباني القديمة التي تم تشيدها بالأساليب القديمة البسيطة,كما أنه يقع مركز الشيخ محمد ابن راشد للتواصل الحضاري في ذلك الحي,وهو مركز الهدف من وجوده نشر الثقافة المحلية للناس والزوار.

إن محاولة النبش في ذاكرة دبي القديمة ومعرفة بدايتها تتمثل في البحث عن تلك المواقع المميزة ومشاهدة قصتها القديمة في أزقة حي الفهيدي التي لاتزال تفرض سيطرتها بوضوح من خلال المباني وأبراج الرياح وكل ماهو قديم وتراثي متواجد فيها.

مواقع تقليدية وفنية في دبي:

الأمر المدهش بخصوص كل تلك الأماكن القديمة هي حقيقة أنك ستجد أن بعضها تمكنت من المحافظة علي شخصيتها القديمة التراثية مع إضافة الفن فيها,وكما نقول دائما :القليل من الفن لن يضر,حيث أنه يتوجد معرض للفنون يطلق عليه XVAفي حي البستكية ,وهو في الواقع ليس معرضا فنيا فحسب بل هو بيت للضيافة ومقهي كذلك,ويمكنك تذوق الأطباق المحلية وإحتساء القهوة العربية الأصلية .

أثناء سيرك في حي البستكية ستلاحظ كذلك بعض الحوائط المرسومة عليها والذي يؤكد فكرة محاولة إضافة لمسة الجمال الفني والألوان في شبه تلك الأماكن دون فقدان حسها التراثي القديم .
